We had visitors yesterday and one of them happened to say that her husband had just spent £13,000 on a Rolex watch. Did I say 'oh how lovely'... nope, big mouth me said 'it sickens me to think someone could spend that on a watch when children are starving across the world. I could have kicked myself and probably should have done... even if that is what I do actually think.
Sometimes the mind over powers the mouth. I'm guessing this person and spouse aren't people you care to be in good grades with if their values are so different.
ReplyDeleteMy sons future in laws. They seem perfectly nice but we don't really know them.
DeleteSounds like boasting, good for you.
ReplyDeleteI suffer from foot in mouth syndrome. :-)
DeleteThat's also enough for a car for a low to middle income family struggling to make ends meet.
ReplyDeleteI find that simply not saying anything usually gets the message across while still leaving room for doubt that I just disagreed. Confuses them and sometimes makes them think :D
I really need to stop and think before I speak..
DeleteI have been known to open my mouth to change feet on occasion. I'm afraid my face would have said it all....the world is running out of resources....Arilx
ReplyDeleteI wish it was just my face and not my mouth. x
DeleteYikes. That's a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteI thought so too.
DeleteSometimes you just can't help it. I totally agree with you, its obscene the amount of money people throw away on things when there is so much poverty everywhere. Thank you for your blog visit today.
ReplyDeleteYour blog was a treat to browse.
DeleteThe times I have had to bite my tongue! I totally agree with you though and it is rather indiscreet in these difficult times to be bragging about the price of her husband’s watch. IMO… well said Cherie ! Amanda x
ReplyDeleteI apologised for my rudeness when we saw them today. I need to engage my brain before opening my mouth and saying what I really think. x
DeleteNo good for you. I hate people who brag. We have one that belonged to my grandad it’s an ugly thing. I do not wish to inherit it.
ReplyDeleteYou could put down a deposit on a house! But I suffer from foot in mouth syndrome as well. It’s a woman thing.
Alexander inherited his das Rolex but it's really old and rather ugly. He doesn't particularly like it and I doubt he will ever wear it.
DeleteA woman I worked with told her husband, in no uncertain terms, that she expected a Patek Philippe watch for her sixtieth birthday, giving him name and model number, to make sure he bought the right one. It was £37,500, and when she didn't receive it, she filed for divorce!
ReplyDeleteShe was always shallow and demanding, but that was astonishing, even for her. He had a good job, but there was no way on earth that he could possibly afford that for a watch, and even if he could, it's an obscene amount of money for a timepiece!
If I won millions on the Lottery, (which is doubtful, because we don't play) I might consider spending that, but to be honest, I'd get far more satisfaction from knowing that children were being fed!
I do wear a fairly expensive Rado watch, which was a treat to myself when my private pension kicked in. I'd worked hard, full time, for one company for almost forty years, and decided that I deserved it! Every time I put it on my wrist I feel good, so it's worth it to me.
I do have a very convincing fake 'Rolex', bought in New York in 2008, which is still going strong. It cost me about £12, so I saved £12,988!
