Toffee covered grapes

Yesterday while standing in the checkout queue we were all commenting on the huge size of our 25p grapes.  A lady happened to ask whether we had ever had toffee grapes... Exactly the same as toffee apples but swapping the apples for grapes. We hadn't but I've just made  a batch to take over to Alexander's. We've been invited to tea and I thought it might be a nice little treat for us all.

I cut an apple in half and wrapped each half in foil. (eat it when you've finished the grapes)

Then I made a really simple toffee and dunked each grape in it before standing them on a piece of parchment paper to dry. Be very careful as the toffee is hotter than the sun.. well maybe not quite that hot but it will burn you very badly if it touches your skin.

Et Voila... we have toffee covered grapes. They might be a nice thing to make for Halloween but I'd be a bit wary of giving such big grapes to small children. If you are a bit strapped for cash it's worth knowing that you can make a really big plateful for not very much money. Make sure you wash and thoroughly dry the grapes before coating them in toffee.

UPDATE.... Don't make them too far in advance as the juice from the grapes dissolves the toffee and you'll end up with grapes that have lovely golden toffee halos but they will be sitting in a pool of syrup... ask me how I know.  I had to make more toffee and re coat the grapes

  1. We actually have toffee covered maple leaves and they are Devine very popular this time of year. Might try the grape trick though as the kids hate fruit.
