I have a new obsession........ I've been watching a lot of 'car camping' videos on You Tube just lately. Tony and I try something new together every year so we plan to give it a go and see how we get on. There's a great phone app called Park4free and we are amazed at just how many places there are to park up for the night. It will be a great way to tour the country very cheaply but probably better suited to warmer months of the year. We Northerners are tough but not so tough that we would enjoy spending the night in the car in the middle of winter. I'll let you know how we get on and might even create a separate blog if we do enjoy it. We could kick ourselves as our last car was huge and would have been perfect. We changed to a smaller one earlier this year and it's going to be a bit cramped but that's half the fun. I recall seeing a blog a year or two ago where someone had tried it but can't for the life of me remember who it was. Have you ever given it a try?
Ilona (Life after money) regularly goes on car camping trips. We did it a few times in our younger days....well, really it was just a case of setting off to our holiday cottage late at night (so we could get there early the next day) and sleeping overnight in the car in a layby. Can't say as I fancy doing it for an actual holiday, and certainly not now we're older! I like comfort, warmth and a loo! Good on you for thinking about it though, I'll be interested to see how you get on.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sooze. I'll go and take a look and see if she has kept a record on her blog list.
DeleteMy first thought and query was "Is it legal to sleep in your car overnight?". I think this thought comes from a recent film that I have seen where a policeman taps on the window telling the occupant she wasn't allowed to sleep in her car overnight. It was a US movie so the rules may be different there. Anyhoo... I checked on google https://www.moneybeach.co.uk/the-boardwalk/is-it-illegal-to-sleep-in-your-car-uk/ and it is ok it really depends on where you park...now why didn't I think of that LOL! Be interesting to see how you get on. keep well Amanda x
ReplyDeleteIt isn't really legal in England but it is in Scotland. We might find a cheap campsite and see how we feel about it.
DeleteI was going to say Ilona too and in fact she is just back from a car camping holiday and still posting every day about her holiday at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIlona has been really helpful. She's a brave lady as I know for sure I wouldn't do it on my own.
DeleteWe have free camping areas here in Oz that are mainly used by folks with caravans & campers and have toilet facilities usually. A lot of vans here are self sufficient with shower/loo, and as we have "great" distances between towns it can super handy. We've not used any, but have friends who do on a regular basis. Would be nice to take the van away, but we are so limited at the moment and it is getting to me. Enjoy if you do it and stay safe whilst away. Take care & hugs.
ReplyDeleteWe are looking forward to trying it but the weather needs to change for the better first. It's absolutely lashed it down most of today.
DeleteMy Mum travelled through Europe and North Africa with one of her adult daughters and son-in-law in the 1980s, often sleeping in the car. Amazing when I think of it.
ReplyDeleteIt will be very liberating and would mean we could have many weekends away.
