I have the loveliest friends

Some time ago I gave away a load of garden plants on Gumtree. The lady and her uncle that came to pick them up have since become great friends to Tony and me and have been over here for a cuppa and a walk around my garden a few times.  They have a membership card to a bargain food outlet and offered to take me today.  To give me an idea of what I could buy there they brought me a huge bag of  things.  There was six blocks of Lurpak  at 5p a block, three catering size tin of baked beans 50p each,  wax covered double Gloucester cheese at 25p each, two large pork pies at 50p each, three jars of Heinz mayo, three jars of large pickled onions. Three family size bags of crisps and another three family sized bags of corn snacks.  There's Hobnob biscuits and Cadbury flakes too. A  large box of Tesco washing powder £2, and loads of stuff for the freezer to name just a few of the things in the bag.  Then they flatly refused to let me pay for any of it. They took me to the food outlet and I spent £23 on food which I priced up on Tesco when I got home,.. It would have cost me more than £56 if I had bought it in Tesco.  They have offered to take me once a month when they go.

Part of my bargain food shop

Customers were each allowed six jars of foreign label mayo free so my friends gave me three of them. I got six jars of Sainsbury pesto for 25p each, large avocados three for 50p and a whole load of other things too.

A gift from my lovely friends

It would have been so easy for me to stock up on tons of junk food as the shelves were stacked high but I stuck to buying only  the things I would use or eat.

  1. Sounds like brilliant savings! That was a very a very generous gesture from your friends. A little kindness and generosity goes a long way especially during these difficult times 😊. Keep well. Amanda x

  2. WOW!!!!! They are amazing savings, unlike here at the moment where prices are going through the roof for food. Seems ludicrous when we could grow anything here from tropical to cold climate foods, raise animals for meat & are surrounded by oceans. My eyes watered last week when I noticed that the pricier cuts of lamb were $46 per kilo............what? Enjoy, take care & hugs.

    1. Crikey that is a lot of money for lamb. Having said that, the pricier cuts of lamb here command eye watering prices.

    1. It's strange how new friends are made isn't it. I would never have met them had it not been for Gumtree.
