Proof that I am a tightwad

As if you really needed any proof :-)   I won't even throw away the base of the onion when I am cutting one up. I did absolutely nothing to this other than poke it into the compost. Obviously I am not going to get an onion from it but I will be able to cut the green shoots several times before it is completely exhausted.  If I remember I will make a note of how often I am able to harvest green shoots before it gives up.  I will leave one untouched and see if it will actually flower next year and give me onion seeds. You can also do the same with carrots and just add the leafy green tops to salads and soups.  Again, I am not sure whether they would ever produce a flower but I will give it a try next year and see how I get on.

I have picked the shoots off my peas for weeks now and I have just popped out to check the garden and noticed I have peas flowering. It's probably far too late to get a crop but I will keep an eye on them. Sometimes November can be very mild.  I may get some pods that I can treat as mange tout. I took the peas out of a dried soup mix and just scattered them into some pots.  I will definitely do this again next year but I will start earlier. Planted radish about a fortnight ago and even if I don't get any actual radish I can still eat the leaves. I will put some photo's on the veggie page to show how much produce I actually have right this very minute.

It's been less than a week and I already see green shoots

Onion bases.

A couple of pinches of radish seed will give me green leaves to add to salads for weeks

The gutter garden is still giving me radish, Beet leaves, lettuce and tiny onion seedlings for salads

  1. I attempted a garden-was excited I got seedlings then transferring outside killed them. Good for your success.

    1. I spend a lot of time in early spring hardening my plants off before they get put in the ground

    1. I've never grown spinach. Is there still time for me to order some seed and get it into the ground

  5. That's fantastic, Cherie! You can do the same thing with celery, as well. I tried it once. I got some leaves, but the plant died after transplanting it. Maybe it was too hot here. It's really a cold weather plant.

    1. I grew celery that way before my hip op and will again in the spring.I am trying to regrow the base of a fennel bulb to give me some fresh green fennel leaves. Never grown it before so I don't know how successful it will be.
