The lavender has buzzed with bees for weeks and weeks now but yesterday I decided that it was starting to look shabby so it was time to cut it back. I have put all the lavender to dry and it will be lovely for making lavender bags when the sewing urge hit me. My friend Joan brought me a gorgeous lavender bag in the shape of a little umbrella. The handle is made from a pipe cleaner and the body part is simply a half circle sewn into a cone and gathered. It looks very effective and my plan is to make a few to hang in the wardrobe and pop into drawers. They would make a lovely little craft fair seller if anyone is fancying having a go. I won't get out in the garden today as the wind has really picked up and is whipping up quite a storm. It has been to my advantage this morning as while out walking it had blown some greengages from a tree. We had no idea this tree was there so we stopped and gathered a full 1.5kg to share. They are as sweet as anything and will be put to very good use.
We've picked the first cucumber and now I've started blanching then freezing any runner beans that develop .Last night I picked 125g. There's loads more developing and I am planning on trying the leaves which I discovered last night are edible. I also discovered that in America the runner bean plants are actually grown for the flowers. They don't eat the beans? Is this true my American friends?

ReplyDeleteHi Lee. It's lovely to hear from you. Greengages are lovely to eat fresh or made into jam. My friend is going to use them in a cake instead of plums
DeleteLavender is lovely - my favourite fragrance by far. xx
ReplyDeleteI love the scent of violets. In fact I love most old fashioned floral scents
DeleteI'm not sure; I've never grown them. I was told that growing beans adds nitrogen to the soil, too. Everything looks so healthy!
ReplyDeleteIt's had plenty of rain. You could try growing the beans up a trellis next year. They look so pretty and are very tasty
DeleteThe lavender is in bloom in my garden too, Cherie, though it's the end of Winter here. The bees love it! Your garden is looking green! MegXx
ReplyDeleteMine had been gorgeous but it's a bit of a thug and needs a really good trim after flowering
DeleteLavender looks lovely & yum, those greengages look great. I'm on catchup after a few computer problems so will pop back in later for earlier posts. Take care, stay safe & huggles.
ReplyDeleteThe lavender is nice for flavouring sugar. A couple of teaspoons of dried lavender added to a jar of sugar makes the most wonderful flavouring for lavender scones if you leave it a while to develop.
DeleteWhat a thrill to have so much lavender drying all ready for those Winter months as a reminder of the beautiful days of Summer.
ReplyDeleteMy lavender hasn't been as successful this year, it's been in the shade of the sunflowers. X
