Someone's a silly billy

In order to reduce the amount of carbs we eat I have just made a huge pan of corned beef and lentil soup which will last us three days. I usually put plenty of potatoes in when I make corned beef stew but have left them out today. I opened the fridge door to get the carrots out and discovered that Tony had left his sandwiches on the shelf.  I was a bit surprised and assumed he was going to try a bit of intermittent fasting and have his breakfast for lunch.  He has just phoned me and was a bit surprised to hear he had left his sandwiches at home as he has picked up a tub from the fridge... he has picked up a tub of carrots by mistake 😊😊😊 Someone is going to be very hungry when he gets home today.  He usually takes a couple of pieces of fruit but we are trying to only shop if we really need to and he has eaten most of the fresh fruit in the house. yesterday I gave him two slices of tinned pineapple on top of a small bowl of yoghurt. It's been drizzled with a little honey and he thoroughly enjoyed it so asked for the same today.  I very seldom buy tinned fruit but it will become a staple in my food store from now on as it is proving so handy to have in stock.

Himself came in from work with not one but two bunches of roses for me. It's a long time since he bought me flowers for no particular reason.  I was really touched and the house is beginning to look like a film stars dressing room as I have vases filled with sweet peas all over the place. I can't keep picking them fast enough and several of my friends and neighbours have been getting little posies from me.

Sweet peas

Look how much they have grown in a few days

I got fed up of buying fresh carrots which turn out to be wringing wet when I open the packet.  I ended throwing half a bag of mouldy green carrots out each time I bought them.  Now I wash the carrots when I buy them and after patting them dry I layer them in tubs with kitchen paper in between each layer.  They have lasted three weeks up to now and still look as fresh as they did when I bought them.  Thankfully the carrots in my veggie plot are coming along nicely.  The thinning's and tops are making great soup bases. Don't throw out those carrot tops.  Chop them up very finely with some garlic and onions. They make a great base for a soup and you can freeze them till you need them.

  1. How lovely! Can't remember the last time my husband bought me flowers, I usually buy my own when I go shopping. The only thing he presents me with is trugfuls of runner beans 😂

    1. It's come on a long way since the sickly fruit in sugar syrup that I remember from my childhood. The tinned fruit now seems very much nicer.

I love tinned pineapple and always have a couple of cans in the cupboard.
Had to laugh about the lunch.

    1. I quite fancy making a pineapple upside down cake but Tony and I are not allowing ourselves cake for the next three weeks.

  6. My husband took my son's lunchbox to work once by mistake....it would have been more understandable had it not been orange with Action Man on the front! Arilx

  7. Can't help you at all on eating runner beans, here in Maryland. We just eat whatever canned beans are on the shelf, no gardeners in this house. But I do like carrots, and I wondered what is that "kitchen paper"? Paper towels? Wax paper? Parchment paper? Brown paper?
Your bouquets of flowers look wonderful!

    1. Hi Ruth. The kitchen paper is paper towels and for the life of me I don't know why I typed kitchen paper as we always say paper towels. My brain must have been still out in the garden.
