Waste not want not

Yesterday I noticed that we had five oranges languishing in the fruit rack. It's not that we don't like them but they just seemed to be sitting there starting to go a bit soft. Seeing as how we had a new box of fruit I realized that the oranges would probably just go to waste so I set to and turned them into marmalade. I love chunky, slightly bitter marmalade and this is absolutely gorgeous and will last for ages in the fridge. I used to make jam and marmalade in huge quantities years ago but ended up giving most of it away as we just couldn't get through it quickly enough. I now only make enough to last a few weeks at a time. If ever we should decide to move then I want a proper pantry. I would love to see shelves filled with glistening jars of preserves. I haven't had a pickled egg in years and they used to be a nice addition to a salad back in the days when I had a pantry filled with pickles, chutneys, jams and marmalades

I set to and finished the binding on the quilt last night . I love to hand sew the binding as it gives it such a lovely finish. I've folded it up now and put it on the end of the spare bed and now I want to change the colour scheme of the room. The quilt looks so fresh and nautical that I think a blue and white them would look really nice.  Maybe when the lock down is finished I will consider it.

  1. The marmalade sounds good & being the only jam eater in our house now, I usually just buy what I like, namely orange or ginger marmalade. Blueberry is the one I actually make. The quilt is so fresh & reminds me of the seaside. Well done on the finish & I'll be handstitching some binding tonight while we watch an episode of The Yorkshire Vet. Take care, stay safe and huggles.

    1. I'm not keen on watching Vet programmes. They always seem to need to shove their hand up inside some poor animal or other. Bleurghhhhhh

  2. That quilt looks lovely. As you say blue and white always looks clean and fresh. My mum used to ake marmalade with Seville oranges but it doesn't fit in with our meal pattern so I have never made it .

    1. Thanks Joy. I am limiting the amount of marmalade and jam I eat. The weight is creaping back on.
