Along the lanes I'd love to wend, near Artist's Mews, on Writer's Bend. Where fragrant flowers of every hue sparkle in the morning dew. I wish I lived in Carver's Valley, Quilter's Creek or Cross Stitch Alley. Just think of all the things I'd make, if I lived by Crafters Lake.......... The sweet potato experiment
I have just been sorting through my veggie trolley and discovered some very gnarly sweet potatoes. I have put them to soak for a little while in some water and then I will see if I can grow some in a big pot in the conservatory... It's going to look like an edible jungle in there at this rate.
For tea/dinner tonight I am cooking a pork casserole. I have a couple of pork steaks in the freezer and they will bulk out nicely with some veggies and a rich gravy. I will serve it with mashed potatoes and Yorkshire puds.. Good old fashioned home cooking is now going to feature in many homes over the next few months. I worry about how those without cooking skills will manage to feed their families. If you watched Jamie Oliver on TV last night you may be as mystified as we were... Although Tony and I do keep most of the things he cooked with, for heavens sake, how many families have parmesan and pine nuts as a store cupboard essential. I doubt very much that a great many British people have any idea what cumin or fresh coriander tastes like. He would be far better off sticking to hot pots and casseroles using veggies that people are familiar with.

ive grown thee before the trick is once youve soaked them dry them off and pop them in the airing cupboard in an individual plastic bag with just a dusting of compost give it a couple of weeks and they should start to sprout then you just chip the little sprouts off once they have a leaf and pop them in water on a windowsill till the roots grow a bit
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate. That's really useful... (your nasty troll popped up on my blog but I just deleted it)
DeleteI was just speaking with my stepmom and she was saying the fact that the frozen food sections have been wiped outs because so many people don't know how to cook!
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed to hear that about Jamie's new show but not really surprised - they should have hired Jack Monroe - she could really have shown folks how to cope!
I've been making all of my mom's old recipes. Tuna and noodles, spaghetti with meat sauce, meat loaf and mashed potatoes, etc. It's so comforting to have delicious, homemade food. I always eat this way, though. I am very thankful that we can grow food here year round. It's been a lifesaver.
ReplyDeleteI must disagree with you about the Jamie recipes . I was very impressed and thought they would be helpful for lots of people and incidentally I am 78 so no spring chicken. Keep safe.
ReplyDeleteIt does say on the web site how you can sub stuff - e.g. ground almonds for pine nuts (which I'm going to try as it looked really good, that pesto, but I have to say that was my thought too. Jack would do it a lot better.
