I have just been sorting stash in my craft room and came across something that took me on a little stroll down memory lane
Several years ago I worked as Eco Schools project officer. My job was to support the schools in everything green and sustainable. I spent many a happy craft session within the schools using up all the things that would normally be thrown in the bin or recycled. I used to challenge the children to come up with an item that I couldn't re use.....One day I went into school and asked the class if they had thought of something that I couldn't find another use for... They were expecting this question and had obviously been waiting for me to ask. I looked around the room to the different groups and a few giggles later a little girl put her hand up... I bet you can't use this Miss... came her reply. She held out an orange peel..... Next time I visited the school I returned her orange peel... and some of my own... I had used sugar paste cutters to cut tiny shapes. Then I dried them under some blotting paper and a telephone directory… d'you remember them? They used to be thick heavy books.. in fact they make great flower presses, just slide the flowers in between the pages and leave them for a few weeks. I digress, I was talking about orange peel. I opened up the box I had put them in and watched the amazement in their teachers eyes… or was it bemusement??? :-)They used it on a big frieze that they were working on. After 'varnishing' it with PVA it graced the classroom wall for quite some time
Ingenious. I like textures and these are pretty. I remember telephone directories - they still come through my door occasionally - but I don't know for how much longer.
ReplyDeleteI just read (in a magazine) a recipe which used orange peel, stripped of pith, soaked in sugar water and dried , then dipped in dark chocolate!
ReplyDeleteHi Jan.. I made some last year... they were divine. I also made sugared cranberries and they were wickedly moreish
DeleteI use the peel as a base for stove top pot pourri.
