I have been looking at this young mans videos for inspiration and today I'm going to follow his instructions to the letter to see if it is possible to grow a pineapple. We bought a fruit at the weekend so here it is in all its naked glory. . Unfortunately my pineapple has a few brown patches so it might not work.. If it doesn't root I'll keep trying until I succeed. I am expecting more of a houseplant than an actual pineapple.... but if one should grow I would be delighted

My brother does it this way. Slice the top of the pineapple off. (You know, the pretty "spiky" bit) and then, kinda peel off the lower bits of it. Place it into water. (Enjoy the spiky bits as the roots grow in the water.) Once the roots are rather long, transplant into a nice big pot with nice soil. Water well, of course, since it has been in water! Now, the plant will grow. I think he gets pineapples the following year. You have to overwinter it in a warm place. Now, this works in Georgia. Not sure about anywhere else! I have not done this myself but my brother's pineapples are a gorgeous golden color, quite small but tasty! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kay. I will try that way too and see which works best. I don't think I will be lucky enough to grow a pineapple in my little bit of England but I will give it my best shot
DeleteTwo nice things about this method: 1- The spiky plant looks really nice in your home as it is growing the roots. 2- Sometimes during a drought, we are not allowed to water our plants. However, since since is really a food, it was okay to water! :-)
