Along the lanes I'd love to wend, near Artist's Mews, on Writer's Bend. Where fragrant flowers of every hue sparkle in the morning dew. I wish I lived in Carver's Valley, Quilter's Creek or Cross Stitch Alley. Just think of all the things I'd make, if I lived by Crafters Lake.......... Flavoured sugars.
I'm planning on making some rose scented sugar as soon as the rosa rugosa is flowering in my neighbourhood. It always smells absolutely heavenly and I hope that some of the fragrance will infuse into the sugar. Lavender is fabulous for making lavender sugar. Just add a load of the flowers into a jar filled with sugar. Leave it for a couple of weeks and remember to shake it a couple of times a week so that the flavour and fragrance infuses all the sugar in the jar. I have used lemon and orange zest in exactly the same way. Take fine shreds of the zest and pop it into a jar of sugar. The flavour is lovely after a couple of weeks and don't sieve it out as the shreds of zest are a nice addition to porridge or cakes. Has anyone tried elderflower and lemon sugar? I might have to give it a try and see how it turns out.
