Using straw as a garden mulch

This morning we popped over to Milbry Hill equine shop to get the dubbing for Tony's shoes and while there I picked up a pack of rapeseed straw which I'm going to use as a mulch on my veg plot. It's been heat sterilised so I'm hoping that as it breaks down it'll add some structure to the beds. I could have bought a bale of straw much cheaper but this has been shredded and heat treated so there won't be any seeds that might germinate.  I don't want to end up with a garden full of rapeseed.

  1. I love straw as mulch. It really gives a steady slow feed to my citrus trees and irises.
