Well I've made the big decision to have internet removed from the house and rely on a mobile phone package. It means that I won't be blogging as often ... maybe a couple of times each week instead of every day. It will save us over £300 each year and that's money that can be put to very good use. I'll be opening up my home twice a week to elderly ladies during the really cold weather and I'll use the money that we save on broadband to make a nice hot meal at lunch time for them. It'll only be a simple meal with veg from my garden but my house is always lovely and warm through the winter and I can't bear the thought that some poor old soul is sitting cold and lonely when I have the space. At a push I could fit 12 people in and I have a pile of jigsaws and books to share while they are here. I've been chatting online with our local group and am amazed that people see it as some great act of kindness... It's only a bowl of soup or a pasta dish and somewhere warm to sit during the day. Anyone who comes along can bring a small craft project, perhaps a sewing project or some knitting. Many many years ago I ran a craft group from here and we often had 12 people come along so I kind of feel that I am coming full circle. I intend to make use of the free computers/wifi in our local library which is only a fifteen minute walk away. They are so seldom used so I can probably book a session to suit me if I want to. I can make my gardening videos and then simply sit in the library and use their free wifi to upload them to you tube while I read a newspaper and it won't eat into my mobile data.
If you live walking distance to the Library, the WiFi compromise might be a good alternative. We need to cut our satellite TV. We too could use the time and money spent much better.
ReplyDeleteI spend far too much time online and have already started to reduce the amount of time I spend on the internet. I could be reading, knitting sewing, gardening or a dozen different things instead.
DeleteI don't spend very much time on the internet, except to check emails about my young brother & catch up on blog reading and at the moment the occasional post from my own blog. I find I get very giddy with things like Youtube and find a lot of info on the web is confusing & prone to different interpretations.
ReplyDeleteYour idea to help & socialise with others through winter is lovely & I'm totally in awe. Good on you. Take care and hugs.
Eek. I kept the internet, but we got rid of our television channels and home phone line. That was easier to do for us as we didn't watch a lot. American television isn't the greatest. Most of what we watch is on Britbox or Acorn (both really cheap alternatives to what we paid for television stations. This saved us over $120 a month! (at exchange rate that's almost the same in pounds, maybe a bit less). We found out that, if there is a show we like, we can purchase a season of it (the current season) for a fraction of what we were paying for the television stations.
ReplyDeleteIt's really nice that you are going to be opening up your home. I am sure people will appreciate that especially with the rising costs.
WiFi is here to stay for us. DH works from home, I use the internet while writing, so has to have internet for school, and it's not unknown for us to be all watching different films at the same time - across the internet! However we are likely to trim stuff as we go. Times are crazy!
ReplyDeleteOh Cherie, that is very kind of you, and sounds like it could be great fun too with the ol' ladies xXx
