The cost of electric and gas is going up so just for the fun of it I am going to try cooking on our multi fuel stove. We do boil water on the top and I did cook a rice pudding a few years ago and some baked potatoes inside the stove but I've never tried to cook a casserole. It's time we learned to make use of the stove so that in the event of an emergency we'd be able to cook a hot meal. Tony has just fried himself an egg in a cast iron frying pan on the top of the stove.... What did we learn? Well first of all we discovered that we need to burn dry wood to build up some heat. The smokeless fuel we usually use will give a nice steady heat to make casseroles but didn't get the stove top hot enough to fry the egg. I already knew from watching You Tube videos that it would take some time to heat the frying pan and maybe I could have left it a bit longer..... I will next time.

After a short while I thought that putting a lid on the pan would cook the egg quicker.... To be honest I'm not sure it made much difference but as I become more adept at cooking on the stove I'll find out what works best
It took quite a while for the egg to be be properly cooked and we found that the thinner layer of egg white did burn so Tony discarded it

On Monday I intend to cook a vegetable casserole on the stove top. It will take all day and I have no idea how it will turn out so won't use meat on this occasion as it's too expensive to spoil. I'll let you know how I get on.
And just because I know you love Christmas as much as I do (well maybe not) :-) I thought I'd show you the Christmas socks I bought yesterday. Mine were from Tesco and Tony's were from Pep and Co
And after Joy mentioned hers the other day I couldn't resist buying the Poinsettia from Aldi. It hardly broke the bank at £2.69 or thereabouts
And please be careful folks. Tony has just had a call supposedly from the National Crime agency saying he has had his bank account closed. and his NI number compromised.. the usual yadda yadda yadda stuff that some folk are daft enough to believe. DO NOT LISTEN.TO THESE THIEVES.. Please just hang up.
I'm liking your idea of the stovetop cooking & although we do heat the kettle occasionally, I've not tried anything else on ours. Many moons ago I had a wood burning stove which did all our cooking, keeping the house at a reasonable temperature and heated all our hot water. I loved it. They have slightly different configuration of heat distribution, but experimenting sounds fun & I can't really try it at he same time as our wood heater is off now for summer. Love the socks & poinsettia. Take care & hugs.
