Harvesting

It's stopped raining at last though I don't know if it will start again later today. I was able to get outside in the garden for a little while and pick all the veggies for tea and the salad boxes.  The Calendula (marigold) add a really pretty finish to the salads and have a very mild flavour.  I understand that they are full of all manner of wonderful vitamins and minerals. It's just as well that Tony will eat whatever is put in front of him as he's getting a good scattering in his salad each day.  I don't think it ever crosses his mind to grumble. I've been adding a small handful of strawberries and blueberries to yoghurt as a little dessert most evenings. We're only getting a handful off the strawberry plants each day so far but hopefully things will pick up over the next few weeks.  I'm trying hard to leave enough peas for tea but I keep eating them straight from the plants. They'll be finished soon and the next batch are nowhere near ready. That's the nice thing about harvesting. Everything is a treat when it's fresh but soon it's finished and then there is something else to look forward to.

A pan of lovely fresh picked cabbage and some sprout
and kale leaves

Sauerkraut

I used up the last of the Sauerkraut that I made last year so yesterday I made another batch.  The green cabbage is sweeter than the red but the red really did improve over time. I'm hoping to be able to turn my own red cabbage into sauerkraut later in the season. It's a lovely addition to the salad lunch boxes and so very good for the gut. I should probably make some more Kombucha as it's been a while since I made any. I'm planning on pickling some of my cucumbers as they are starting to take over my life and we can't keep up with eating them.

  1. All looks good & so yummy, fresh from the garden. Nothing in our veg patch at the moment here except some rhubarb, but as soon as it's a little warmer, I'll get started. Raining again today & no sun, which we've seen very little of here in the Gippsland area of Victoria this whole year so far. I tried sauerkraut as a child & didn't like it, but may be I should have another go in my old age(ha ha). Take care & hugs.

  2. I feel a bit feeble getting excited over my broad beans and cucumbers when you have so much more but it's all good, isn't it?
I'll be interested in how you pickle your cucumbers.
