Have you tried the Keto diet? Yesterday I watched a few You Tube videos and it has piqued my interest as Tony and I eat pasta or rice most days. Tony is a complete bread/pie fiend and is piling on the lard. We have a wedding to go to in July and both want to lose a little weight before the big day. Keto might help us find alterative things to eat instead of our carb heavy diet. I'd love some nice tried and tested recipes if you have any. I made a start yesterday morning with a staggeringly high fat carb free breakfast. Thick bacon rasher chopped up complete with fat, two eggs and 30g of cheese. I fried it in a mixture of olive oil and butter then sprinkled it with a bit of sea salt. It filled me up completely and I didn't want/need/have anything else to eat until tea time. I didn't even want/have the orange chocolate Aero that Tony waved in front of me last night while I was cooking a moussaka for the freezer. I topped the moussaka with grated cheese rather than cheese sauce.

This morning I have made a cheese and avocado two egg omelette. It was absolutely gorgeous too.
I have at long last weaned myself off sugar in my tea. That isn't something I ever thought would happen but now the thought of sweet tea sets my teeth on edge. Our aim is to try Keto for at least a month to see if there is any noticeable difference in our waistlines. My goal is to lose a half stone in the coming month and I'll blog about it here to show whether it is working for me. We will have one or two meals each week with carbs as I don't think Tony could last if he didn't get his fix. I've ordered a book from The Works to help me with shopping and meal planning.
Keto does work but I admit to finding it too strict to follow to the nth degree. I do however try to stick to a low carb diet and find many keto recipes very helpful. This is something recommended by both my GP and cardiologist. I combine it with intermittent fasting and it does work. The two things I avoid most are rice and pasta.
ReplyDeleteThere are a number of quite good sites on Youtube for recipes. I'd also refer you to two Youtube doctors Peter Berg for some good info and recipes and to Dr. Jason Fung. He is a Nephrologist here in Canada and his is the plan that most doctors recommend, first for diabetics and second for weight loss. He has written The Obesity Code and The Obesity Code Diet - lots of recipes. He is well respected and has videos aimed at his students & fellow doctors but others for people like you and me. He presents things very clearly and with a sense of humour.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Margie. I will take a look at those videos. I am really keen to learn all I can about it.
DeleteKeto would probably suit us, husband loves his meat and carbs do me no good at all. Carby things just bloat me, I don't find cereal, oats or toast keep hunger at bay, but protein certainly does. Might think about trying it ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThere are some great videos on You Tube. I will post a link to my favourite ones
DeleteI've heard good things about keto but I gather it takes some working at. That's not something you are afraid of, I know. :-)

I plan to give it my best shot. x
DeleteYour breakfast looks delicious. I must admit I miss a cooked breakfast liked I used to have in the UK and do get a bit fed up of yoghurt, banana, oatmeal and grated apple every morning. I love pasta and pies too. Look forward to seeing the other meals you prepare while on your diet. keep well Amanda x PS: Very grateful for parcel contents, thank you. I have posted about our swap on my new weekly post :-)
ReplyDeleteIt was really tasty and filling. No cravings for snacks at all and I won't want any lunch. I hope you didn't already have a thimble ring. x
DeleteNo I haven't got a thimble ring in fact I have never seen one before. I do use a thimble when I have to sew but this looks very practical. If I go back to cross-stitching I am sure it will be handy too. Thanks A x
DeleteI did Keto last year for 1 month its brilliant but restrictive. It's made me find alternative to heavy carbs. I use butternut squash thinly sliced on a mandolin to make lasagne. Spiralised courgette with 50g of cooked pasta with bolognese. Beans are added to lots of meals now too. It does stop the peaks and troughs of sugar/carb rushes from food and snacks, that invariably end up with feeling tired. Chips can be made from Swede or butternut squash, lower carb alternatives.
ReplyDeleteOh yum. Thanks for this I will give them a try.
DeleteI did it for 6 weeks a couple of years ago, alongside my daughter. Yes it was restrictive but the weight fell off and I was never hungry. I found a high protein muesli in aldi, they stopped doing it. I had this with yoghurt and blueberries every morning. I had wraps (egg omelette) for lunch, sometimes pineapples and cheese on sticks, dahl, mozzarella and tomato.
ReplyDeleteI made curry and chilli and bolognese, served with cauliflower rice, and green beans cut lengthwise to resemble spaghetti.
My moussaka topping is greek yogurt, eggs and cheese.
More lovely ideas for me to try. Thanks Gill.
