Lovely day in the garden

The weather took me by surprise today. I was expecting it to be cold and wet but it's not been a bad day at all.  I have spent all afternoon pottering on in the garden just tidying up and getting some big obsolete recycling tubs ready for the start of the growing season. I took the axe and hammer to a huge log that we have down in the potting area. I used to use it for chopping logs as it's a really good height, sadly it's now really rotting away and starting to crumble.  It's not great for burning as it's way to rotten for that so I wondered what to do with it.  Then I remembered watching a video where the chap used huge logs in the bottom of one of his raised beds.  Apparently over many years it will rot down adding compost and nutrients to the bed. It will also hold onto moisture during very dry seasons. That got me eyeballing the big empty tubs so I chopped large chunks off the log and put the pieces and the bark in the bottom of each tub. Then I emptied one of my compost bins and divided it up between the two big tubs..  It's mostly rotted down but over the next few months it will decompose nicely. I've covered them with a thick piece of cardboard for now but I'll fill the rest of the space in the tubs with shop bought compost later on when I want to plant them up. They will be ideal for growing tomatoes and cucumbers. I have another couple to fill but that can wait for another day. They are plenty big enough for me to put a row of marigolds and basil in front of the plants too so they will be beautiful as well as productive,  When the workshop is dismantled I plan to move the tubs off the path and put them against the wall where the shed is currently standing.  Have you been busy today?

  3. Love hearing about & seeing your garden & how it is always in a state of change. I suppose most gardens grow & change continually, even when there are no "gardeners" about. You've given me an idea with how to use the bark & odd bits of firewood that comes home in the trailer after a day of woodcutting out in the forest. Thank you. Take care, stay safe & hugs.

    1. Are you planning on growing any veg? I'd be interested to see how our productive gardens compare from season to season.
