Chuffed to bits

At the bottom of my garden is a giant Leylandii hedge owned by the Catholic Diocese. . It must be at least thirty feet tall and maybe even taller. It blots out the evening sunshine and hides the sunsets... My lovely neighbour Joan has just rung me to ask whether someone is cutting the hedge down. She lives opposite me and can see the hedge from her bedroom window. I popped out to have a look and someone is cutting about ten feet off the top of the hedge. My garden is going to be bathed in sunshine for a lot longer during the evening and we are going to see the most glorious sunsets for a few years until it all grows back. When they get a bit further along I will take a photo so that you can how much difference it's going to make.

  1. How exciting! You can enjoy gorgeous sunsets with a nice glass of wine.

  2. I have tall trees at the bottom of my garden, (not mine), but they only blot out the light when they have leaves on in the summer. Very tall Leylandii's are a nightmare. I keep mine topped to 6feet. Your garden will feel more specious when they have been chopped back.

    1. I can't wait to see how they get on tomorrow or the next day. They haven't reached the bottom of my garden yet but it's already made a huge difference.

  3. 10 feet is a lot of height. It will look entirely different at times of the day.

    1. I'll be able to see the sky rather than dense green leaves.

  4. Great, but I do hope it wasn't someone that shouldn't be doing it. We have a Pittosporum hedge that we inherited when we bought here & are going to take it down (last year-ddidn't happen), as it blocks the winter sun & it is always damp underfoot around that part of the garden. They are also notorious for sapping the soil of any goodness. I plan to put the new raised veg beds there probably. Enjoy the new found sunshine. I loved seeing your garden in the last post & is it the brown shed that is going? Take care, stay safe & huggles.

    1. I don't think many people own a Cherry Picker and industrial hedge cutter. Definitely the man for the job.

  5. Oh, that's good news. Those leylandii 'hedges' can be a right nuisance.
