A message popped up on my phone regarding applying for a marriage tax allowance. It's one of those companies that want to charge for doing the applying for you. Common sense immediately told me that I only need check it out on the UK HMRC website and do it myself. I have put a link to the money saving expert site in case you want to check it yourself.
The saving isn't vast... about £250 a year but can be backdated for four years. It might mean you can fill your food cupboard or switch the heating on for a bit longer this winter. I plan to check it out once Tony gets up and I will let you know how I get on. Just click the link though as there are so many firms looking to make a quick quid from us. I initially googled Marriage Tax Allowance and an awful lot of firms look very official but want to charge. A quick phone call to HMRC will give you all the info you need but the MSE has put a very informative article together. The link below tells you all about it and how to apply.

It will cover the winter fuel bill and leave some in the bank for a rainy day. Far better in our bank account than the tax man's.
DeleteUnfortunately one of you has to be a non tax payer and the other a tax payer. You are basically giving them your tax £1250 of your allowance. I'm in dispute with HMRC over the sale of my rental property at the moment which was delayed by 20 weeks costing me dearly (£5k) as the rules changed in the new year 2020-2021. So I can't claim for anything until I get a result on my tax bill!
ReplyDeleteI'm a non tax payer so we will benefit by this allowance. When I was self employed I transferred my tax allowance to Tony each year but now that I am retired I don't have an income.
