Let's talk turkey

I have heard mention a few times now that people are likely to want small turkeys this year as large groups won't be able to get together.  Last night on the news they were saying we need to think about ordering smaller ones now or they won't be available.  I wouldn't be surprised if  huge turkeys will be very cheap once the festive season is on us so it might be worth keeping your eyes open. Last year we bought a leg of lamb from Aldi and it was very cheap and tasty.  I love lamb and it's my meat of choice so if they are cheap this year I now have the freezer space to buy a couple.  We are off to Bolam's in Sedgfield on Saturday to bulk buy some meat. It may well be the last major shopping trip we do this side of Christmas. I noticed that Aldi had mince pies in the other day but the use by was the middle of November.  I don't eat them before December so won't be buying any for quite some time. Has anyone frozen them before? I wonder if it might be worth buying a couple of boxes in the middle of next month and popping them in the freezer.

  1. I heard that on the news last weekend and I just thought Turkey is such a great meat to adapt, I'd find losts of ways of using it up.

    1. Me too. I am more than happy to fill my freezer with turkey if it's cheap

  2. Good idea Cherie, I'll keep a lookout. The supermarkets generally do have big reductions on food around Christmas or just after anyway don't they, as they massively overorder.

    1. I am wondering how people will do their Christmas shopping. I think the parcel deliverers are going to be working flat out this year

  3. I can't believe all this Christmas stuff is on us already, but we've been told here in Oz, we could be in for food shortages this year as they can't bring in the seasonal workers from overseas to pick fruit & veg or the back packers who also do it for money to stay & explore our vast country. Not sure why ordinary folk without jobs can't do it. I've picked apples & worked in a canning factory when money was tight many years ago. It didn't hurt me.Take care & stay safe. Huggles.

  4. I agree with you - but it when it is cheap and store it/freeze it. There were reduced price Brussel Sprouts in the local Coop this week - 15p a bag! There was nothing wrong with them - it was just the 'use by' date. So they have been steamed and are now in the freezer for adding to meals. I know it is a treat sometimes to spend on expensive things, but when folks do that all the time is ceases to be a treat. Same with take-aways; but don't get me started on what a waste of money that is!! xx
