Food for free

While out walking the other day I picked up two large windfall pears. I have just added them to a handful of very fragrant rose petals that I picked from my garden. In about a month I will have a beautifully flavoured rose petal and pear vinegar to add to my pantry. It will be lovely sprinkled over salads or tossed into a bit of fruit salad.I missed out on them this year but next year I plan to pick some rosa rugosa petals from the hedgerow to see how it compares.  If you decide to use flower petals just take one or two petals from each flower. That way it will still be able to form a seed head.

I am enjoying experimenting with vinegars at the moment and have been watching a very clever lady on you tube

  1. I love balsamic but am careful due to the sugar content.

    1. My understanding is that the sugar turns to alcohol and eventually vinegar

  3. That sounds delicious. Great tip about the petal collection too. I would never have thought of that, thanks.

  4. Sounds delicious, I like to make different vinegars and oils. I have some chive vinegar that I am using for salads at the moment.
