Crikey what a pong

I decided I would test my lacto fermented cauliflower for crispness this afternoon.. YIKES........There wasn't any crispness at all just a pongy load of mush in the jar. I did  follow the instructions to the letter but am wondering whether I used tap water instead of filtered water.  I think I will stick to sauerkraut as the smell of the cauli was absolutely yuk. I've chucked it all on the compost heap and lit a few scented candles around the house. I have had no trouble with the lacto fermented apples or the watermelon rind.  They are gorgeous and it's made watermelon worth buying now and then. My date vinegar is coming along nicely as are the cider vinegar and  the pear and rose petal vinegar.  It's been fun experimenting and I am probably spending more time than I should, learning about fermenting and making  kombucha. I made another few bottles of rosehip syrup this morning and then I rolled the leftover mushed rosehips into balls and am currently freezing them to use in place of teabags when I fancy something a bit different to my usual drink.   Rosehip tea is supposed to be lovely and I will let you know what I think when I try it.  It might be yuk but I will try anything once..

My new fridge freezer arrived and it looks massive compared to my little fridge and separate freezer.  It's going to come in very handy over the next few months if we have a total lockdown again. It's standing in the garage and we have put a very low wattage heater next to it so that it doesn't drop below the recommended temperature in there. It means that the garage will be just to say warm enough to work in and will be cheaper to heat than my workshop which seems to have become a heated storage for my paper crafting stuff. I haven't done any paper crafting in a good long while but will enjoy getting my woodcarving stuff out to play with in the garage.

  1. Oh! dear.. I can more or less imagine what it was like because it is bad enough when boiling cauliflower. I must say I do enjoy reading about all the different types of things you make, some I have never heard of before. I do like vinegar! When I was a child I used to guzzle the malt vinegar from the bottle. Mum used to tell me it would rot my innards...I never could understand that because we used it on food...especially fish and chips!! ha! ha! I have had date vinegar before and it is very nice but I have never tried pear and rose petal vinegar. I like the sound of it though :-) I always buy apple vinegar as it has so many uses other than being a condiment. keep well Amanda x

  4. I love having a freezer. Ours is in our garage right now. Well you win some, and lose some...too bad about the cauliflower. That's how I learn best, from my failures! Andrea
