Thank goodness it has cooled down today. It's drizzled since first thing this morning but my garden is glad of a gentle drizzle now and then. I think my house was glad of it too as it's had a quick once round with the hoover. A wash load is ready to pop on the clothes horse and I have cooked a very tasty chilli for tea.
For my birthday Alexander and Beckah bought me a smashing little food blender and it came in really handy this morning. I pulled a load of stinging nettles out of the garden and chopped them up with some onions and garlic. I fried them gently in olive oil before adding 125g minced lamb, a diced bell pepper and a handful of cherry tomatoes. I ground up two cloves and a half teaspoon of chilli flakes which I added to the pan. Quarter of a lamb stock cube went in next with a half cup of hot water. While this was cooking I cooked a half cup of lentils in some slightly salted boiling water and then drained them and added them to the pan. To finish off I threw in a tin of baked beans. We prefer to use baked beans as they add a lot more taste than the usual kidney beans. I have just had a small portion for lunch and there will be plenty for tea tonight and my lunch tomorrow.

I have read of using nettles for cooking, and a restaurant not far away makes a nettle soup I've not tried, but you are the first actual person I've heard of doing it! Maybe try a soup creation some time.
ReplyDeleteI often add them to soups and casseroles. They are supposed to be very good for us. I have given up fighting the nettle patch and now treat it like an edible crop
DeleteI've never used nettles other than to make plant food for the garden. The forecast promised rain but not a drop. We are desperate and need a break from this heat.

DeleteI love that you said “clothes horse”. I think it’s a term little used now. I must see if my grandchildren know what I’m talking about if I use it instead of airer.
ReplyDeleteI was going to write Airer as that is what we call it but my friend calls her a Maiden. She lives in Lancashire. I didn't know if Airer was a local term.
DeleteBeen roasting hot here all day and still sunny. I'm still sweating even though I've had a bath. Shouldn't complain though. I'm not too sure whether I'd eat nettles - much too afraid of getting stung.

The sting vanishes with cooking and I have read that nettles are highly nutritious. I intend to add a lot more 'weeds' to my diet.
