Bacon and lentil broth

This morning I had a bacon sarnie for breakfast and I was really very good. I only used one slice of bacon instead of two. That left me a slice of bacon to make some Bacon and lentil broth.  I used the last of the stock that I made the other day and it is incredibly tasty.  When I have used up the  stock that I have frozen in cubes I am definitely making it again as it has been a very tasty and nutritious way to make stock. There's plenty for lunch today and tomorrow so I have no need to think about tomorrow's meal.  It's a blue sky and sunshine day so far though heavy showers ae forecast later so I had better get myself outdoors and make the most of it while it lasts. There's not much else I can do in the veg garden until the scaffolding boards arrive so it will just be a little dead heading and plant moving. I keep on deadheading the gladioli and it's made a huge difference to how they look in the garden The apples are falling off next doors tree and I will be gathering them up to cook for the freezer. There are a couple of pear trees in the neighbourhood and I shall be gathering them in a few weeks time.  I do love a gift of free fruit.

A lovely crop on the apple tree.

The red and white gladioli have flowered for weeks and weeks

  1. Many years ago I used to by an knuckle of bacon very cheaply and make lentil and bacon soup. Not sure if you can still buy them today. Your garden looks amazing.

    1. I used to do that too. It was so tasty and cheap. My garden brings me so much peace and tranquility. I love working out there

  2. A little bit of bacon imparts so much flavour, doesn't it? There seems to be masses of tree fruit this year, oh and loads of blackberries....obviously a good year for it.

    1. I love 'good' bacon. This was from the farm shop and was worth every penny. It's a really good year for hazelnuts too. Trouble with nuts is that the squirrels take them before they are ripe

  3. Bacon is brilliant in a soup - it imparts such a wonderful flavour.
I'm loving picking fruit up from under the trees at the allotment too. There's plenty!
