Stocking the pantry

After chatting with my friend Anona the other day I decided to add tinned fruit to my pantry.  Anona is a whizz at saving money and knows the places to shop for great bargains.. Thanks chuck. x
The only tinned fruit I ever buy is pineapple so I was at a bit of a loss what to choose and decided to only buy tinned fruit in juice as it can be a little bit sickly in syrup. It will make lovely fruit crumbles and yoghurts if the lockdown returns sometime during the winter and fruit is either hard to come by or expensive.

My tinned fruit stash now contains
Mango
Pineapple
Peaches
Mandarin oranges

I am planning to pick vast quantities of free plums locally as the trees positively drip with the fruit. Some I will preserve in brandy and some I will just halve and blanch before freezing them. My aim is to make a load of different fruit jams as the seasonal fruit ripens and store them on a shelf in the garage. Jam always comes in handy to add to a variety of dishes such as rice pudding, jam roly poly, steamed sponge etc.

  1. Tins never go out of date despite what they print on it. I too buy in juice or light syrup.

  2. Sliced apple in tins is a good stand by and I also buy fruit cocktail which makes a good trifle. I am doing the same stocking the cupboard ready for the Winter.

    1. I've never seen sliced apple in tins but I am lucky as my neighbours apple tree hangs over my garden and I can pick tons of fruit and freeze it.

Carpentry workshop round the corner makes its sawdust into compressed briquettes and sells then very cheaply by the bag. They were giving them away for free yesterday and I got ten bags. The lovelyoung man even loaded them in my car. Been looking for hollyhocks to,photo for you but they are all really tatty at the moment. Big hugs.xxx
