For several years now a few of my my friends and I had been preparing for Brexit. Each week we would add a little to the store of food and built up a really good 'emergency supplies' cupboard. When the Pandemic hit we were able to draw from our food supplies and not rush out panic buying. What did I learn from that and what would I add to the current provisions store that we are amassing. I do have a huge bag of rice and tons of pasta to use so I haven't added that onto the list.
1) Toilet rolls and boxes of tissues. I was stunned by the panic buying and am in do doubt that if it comes to the crunch it could happen all over again.
2) More dried Pulses. It's far more practical to stock packets of dried peas, beans etc than to have heavy tins in the cupboard. That isn't to say that tins aren't a useful addition.
3) Shampoo bars.. I love the ones from Lush and want to have at least a fresh spare one in my stash. It lasts absolutely ages and has made a huge difference to the condition of my hair
4) Tinned sweetcorn and tomatoes. I love tinned sweetcorn and tomatoes are something I use in vast quantity.
5) Plain flour, dried yeast and baking powder. M yeast and baking powder are getting close to the end of the shelf life.. I always store my yeast in a plastic tub in the freezer to prolong it's life
6) More bees wax to enable me to refresh my wax wraps. I have moved over from cling film and will at some point need to refresh the wraps.
While I am on the subject of Bees Wax I would like to say that the face cream I made from bees wax, shea butter and olive oil has been wonderful. My skin feels soft and hydrated and I won't go back to buying face cream again. I got the idea when I saw Stephenie's post about lotion bars ages ago. I went onto You Tube and watched a few videos before making mine..
What would you add to this list if you were creating a store cupboard
Dried fruit and dried mushrooms, along with extra yeast and flour.
ReplyDeleteDried fruit and various edible seeds are now going on my list.
DeleteHello Cherie. Batteries would go on my list! It may, to some, sound like something one could do without but I ran out of batteries during quarantine and I couldn't use my mouse. As I had to give my classes online I found that I had to quickly learn how to use the keyboard as a mouse ( I had no idea!!)until I found a very old plugin mouse in my store cupboard. I did of course try to buy some in the shops but at that time it was difficult to buy them as the shelves were bare. As for toilet rolls.....dear me what a fiasco....People fighting over toilet rolls not a pretty sight! Luckily I was well stocked and had more than enough so I didn't have to face the hordes. Yes! flour too.... that is a good one as Flour started to run out here. Interesting post!! keep well Amanda x
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda. I hadn't thought of batteries. They are now on my list
DeleteI have a good supply of all the basics - now I'm trying to add treats, pickles, chutneys, sauces and some items from the "ethnic" section of my supermarket - I've found things like canned Baba Ganoush & Hummus - packaged meals - different fruits etc. I'm doing the same sort of thing with my baking supplies - different flours & sugars & dried goods. I just want a bit more variety on hand - just in case.
ReplyDeleteI love the ethnic section of our local supermarket but might pay a visit to one of the Asian food shops own in the town.
DeleteI bought a few extras of over-the-counter medications that we use regularly - pain reliever, allergy pills, and sinus rinse. I was worried that if we both got sick we wouldn't be able to get out to buy them. I still keep a few ahead, just in case.
ReplyDeleteI must remind my son to stock up on Allergy pills. He really suffers in the summer months.
