This morning I caught the train into town for the first time since the beginning of March. While waiting at the station a young man came up and started chatting. I thought it was compulsory to wear masks on public transport and as he didn't have a face mask I offered him the spare one that I had in my bag. He accepted it gratefully and I saw him wearing it in town a bit later on. I was pleased to see quite a few people have taken to wearing a face covering. It certainly made me feel a bit more comfortable walking around town. When I caught the train home the same young man caught the train with me... without his mask. Claimed to have left it on the sofa in the bank... Why am I annoyed you might ask..... Because the train conductor didn't even query his lack of a face covering. The supposed compulsory wearing of face coverings on public transport isn't going to work if people aren't willing to comply. Thankfully I have no further need to go into town for the foreseeable future.
Moan over
While in town I popped into Lush and bought myself one of their gorgeous shampoo bars. Then I had a quick jaunt around one of the many £1 shops that are spread around town. I bought some really pretty plastic waste paper bins. They make gorgeous plant pot covers and were a fraction of the cost of fancy pot covers.
And just look at the roots that tomato plant is putting out. It snapped off the other day when I was moving it. I am staggered at just how quickly it has put out roots and I plan to harden it off and pop it down into the secret garden. If it grows that will be great but I will have lost nothing if it just dies

It would be a shame to just compost the offcut

Generous of you to give away your mask but so sad that people are not doing what is asked of them. The TV did say that conductors and such should not question people without a mask to avoid confrontation and the embarrassment of those who are exempt. What a very strange world we are living in Cherie. I love the look of the bin as plant pot, so very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people will claim to be exempt and it will be impossible to check. Thankfully I now don't need to go into town for at least six months if necessary. I can remain cloistered in my little bubble for ages without concern.
DeleteHow frustrating. I have experienced the same thing here in California. It can be spread through conversations, so I avoid chatting, especially with people who don't distance or wear masks. Too risky. Your tomato cutting is so happy under your special care!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed passing the time chit chatting while waiting in the queue at the bank. Every person in the queue wore a mask and it was lovely to have a different conversation with someone. I have found that the chattiest people are those who live alone. One lady today was 91 and lives alone.
DeleteSo annoying. I usually go out early in the morning and most people are wearing them here. I'm not a social person so I don't tend to chat to strangers lol. Mum said she'd gone on the bus and the driver wouldn't let people on without them. As long as the driver/conductor is polite (if I was exempt) I wouldn't mind being asked about it. If you're a person who can't wear one I would think it's more comforting to know that those who can wear them are. JMO
ReplyDeleteI'm a northerner and we chat with anyone when standing in a queue. Usually little old ladies and they are generally so much fun to listen to...
DeleteGood on you for braving public transport. Not sure I can at the moment, though we very rarely use it these days. I love your bin idea for plant pots. Now that has me thinking. I've made one face mask, though not very successful, but the I've had an email from Vic Textiles, advising that they have trialed a successful filter fabric & also offered a few good patterns, so I'll ring about that today & hopefully get some by post as we can't get into the Melbourne area for the time being. I'll let you know via email, how it goes. Take care, stay safe & huggles.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment our local buses and trains are virtually empty. It's probably as safe to travel now as it's likely to be for a long time. I think there were three or four people spread through two carriages yesterday. My friend has often been the only person on the bus when she has been out.
DeleteIt's frustrating that so many people think they font need to wear a mask. As someone eloquently put it on Facebook: perhaps those same people won't want to accept a ventilator mask when they get the virus!
ReplyDeleteThat's very well put.
