I've lost all sense of smell

This morning I decided to have a mammoth cooking session.  I peeled and chopped a pile of onions and garlic but it was only when I started to fry them that I realised I couldn't smell a thing. I have harboured some sort of bug for a while now and did wonder whether I have been infected by the dreaded bug.

Broccoli pasta bake

Cottage pie

Bolognese sauce

And I have a little experiment going.  I am trying to see how many different veggies will grow from the base plate.  Here is a piece of broccoli stem and the end plate of a garlic clove.  It will be interesting to see whether any shoots will form.. I have done this with lettuce, onions and celery with great succes.

Lettuce regrowing from the base

Another variety of lettuce growing from the baseplate.. Note the fresh new growth

  1. Cherie, I hope it's not what you think....but if it is, I hope you get through it quickly. There are many, many thousands who recover well - my nephew and cousin's husband have. At least if it is the C19 virus, you'll have immunity afterwards and can resume some sort of normal life. Good idea to try regrowing the bases of veggies, think I'll try it too, thanks for the idea. xx

    1. Hi Sooze, I honestly don't think it is anything other than a cold. I haven't had a fever or even a slightly high temperature. My lettuce bases are growing like the clappers and as soon as the weather warms up I will plant them outdoors

    1. Thanks Margie. Tony and I have self isolated for well over a week now and have had no contact with anyone other than one another.

  3. Oh please take care of yourself and your husband. If it is the dreaded virus he will probably catch it too. Hoping and praying it isn't. XXXXX

    1. Thanks Maureen. I don't have a high temperature so fingers crossed that it is just a nasty ordinary bug.

    1. I have felt thoroughly out of sorts for ages but haven't had a high temperature or I might have been really concerned.

  6. I have read the same as what Briony describes, so do take even more care dear Cherie. The great majority of cases resolve well, so there's that.

Your plant experiments are always interesting and your cooking always makes motivates me to make something yummy here as well!

  7. Thanks Laurie. Thankfully Tony isn't a fussy eater and will eat whatever I put in front of him.

  8. I hope you haven't got it, but if you have hopefully it will be mild and over it quickly. I think it's a little difficult to tell at this time of year. Every time I have a tickle in my throat or a cough I wonder if this is it. I hope it hasn't got us all paranoid!

    Take care

  9. Oh, dear. Do you have a sense of taste? That concerns me that you've lost your sense of smell. How is your energy level? I think I had the coronavirus right after taking a cruise to Italy, Greece and Spain in November. There was a huge population of people from China on the plane, ship, and tours. I had the symptoms, but didn't know what was wrong. I recovered at home, on my own. I hope that you do, too.

  10. I also have had a really bad cough and lost my sense of taste and smell. Worst though was my sore throat. Could hardly swallow saliva. 2 weeks. but a lot better now. Like you no high temperature, so I'm just thinking its just a bug thats going around. Hubby has had it too.

  11. Fingers crossed it isn't C 19 although, if it is, you don't seem to have it too badly which is good.
I look forward to seeing the results of your experimentation!

  12. All Looks good and tasty. The veggie regrowing will be fun, brassicas are brilliant for that, dad leaves the stumps in the ground and then cuts an X in the base plate and you get 4 mini ones growing. Hope you feel better soon, loss of smell comes with many different viruses and its still flu/cold season. Healing hugs Emmax

  13. Hope all is well take care. I have just done a big batch cook too, makes me feel useful in such trying times. I too am looking forward to seeing the results of your experiment.
Dried apple is the answer to your question. The soap I made was apple so the dried apple was added for decoration.
