A lovely day for gardening

It's warm and sunny with quite a blowy wind today. Tony has gone off to watch a football match in Manchester and I spent an hour in the garden just having a general tidy up. We bought a load of pansies last year but Tony never got around to planting them so I spent a while planting some of them today. Poor things are flowering their little hearts out and can now stretch their toes out into some good earth. I really noticed a huge improvement in my stability while gardening. In November I was really unsteady on my poorly leg while trying to do a bit of gardening. Today it was much stronger and I was able to bend at the waist without feeling as though I would topple into the hedge. Speaking of hedges. Does anyone have any experience of growing one? I keep reading that we should cut it back by a third in order for it to bush out. It seems such a same to cut off that much growth when it is still hardly more than a line of twigs.

  1. I think you could prune the hedge plants just a little instead - not take a full third - if they are small to begin with. It's great that you have noticed an improvement in your leg. I find that's a good way to compare strength and agility - by doing something you haven't done since last month or last season. It can be hard to see a change day by day but it's clearer with a longer gap.

  2. I don't know anything about hedges but you have kindly given me a focus for my walk this morning. I will go to the garden centre and see if they have nanything nice that I can pop in my front bed (or the back bed, come to that).
    Thanks.

  5. Its lovely to get into the garden this time of year, when all the bulbs are coming through and new shoots beginning to appear, a nice day after all the rainy ones is good to get out. Emma
