I'm a plonker

Several times this past six weeks I have tried to breed baby goldfish.  I waited until the fish in the pond were mating before carefully gathering some pond weed in the hope of a few eggs being attached. Several times I watched a tiny wriggling fish in the bowl only to return later and find it had gone leaving behind a pale ghostly 'thing' on the surface of the water. Last week was no exception so this time I took the tiny fish out of the bowl and put it into a separate bowl so I could watch it.  Imagine my surprise when the fish stopped wriggling and out popped a tiny gnat.  I have not been watching newly hatched fish at all. I have been watching gnat larvae transform.. duh.... slaps head. WELL!!!!!!!!!   yesterday I was just on the point of tipping the bowl of pond water back into the pond and giving up when I spotted the tiniest fish.  I wouldn't have noticed it without my magnifying glass as it was almost transparent.  It looks as though it might be about a week old as it seems very strong and there is no sign of a yolk sac.  It has obviously been hiding in amongst the pond weed.  I already had a small tank primed and ready just in case so transferred the contents of the bowl into the tank.  Today the tiny fish is darting about and really exploring the tank.  I have named him/her Sausage....  cos he is a cute little sausage and I was about to cook sausage rolls and cocktail sausages for Tony's 'Quoits Club'. The do like healthy food at that club don't they? :-)

If we get another baby fish he will be called Rolly.
