Having ordered a floating island kit I decided I would try to make my own. In my stash I have loads of polystyrene cones and I figured that if I stacked them in threes they would float sooooooo............ I put a little vermiculite, a plant and then some gravel in each one.... They toppled over spilling the contents into the pond... I fished out the plants and vermiculite. Back to the drawing board. Then I took a large, deep, plastic tray. I cut four big holes in it and replanted the cones. I popped one into each hole. The tray then sank, the cones tipped over and the contents spilled into the pond..... I fished out the plants and vermiculite....... I got a big plastic plant pot. I put some gravel in and then some polystyrene balls, then the plants and a little bit of gravel.... now don't start laughing.........Stop it now... The pot sank, the balls floated and the plants tipped over and floated helplessly on their side.... I fished out the plants and vermiculite..... Hmmmn.... this was getting tedious. . Then I got a foil tray the same size as the plastic one. I put a layer of an expanded foam kind of fabric into the plastic one. I pressed the foil one in on top and cut holes . I attached polystyrene balls and corks around the outside of the tray... Took all the plants and vermiculite out of the cones . I discarded the cones and used the plants to plant up the tray again..... It floats but I am not chancing my arm. I have wedged it onto some rocks that are submerged in the pond. I will let you know whether the plants thrive or drown.
If at first you don't succeed.......Fingers crossed that you have cracked it.
