Tough love

I've been to whist this afternoon and it was nice to catch up with everyone.  There is a lovely older couple there and last year I really didn't think I would see the husband again.  He was on the point of having his leg amputated and walked with his head virtually on his chest.  What a different person walked into whist today. His wife has cajoled and bullied him (in a firm but kind way). It was often difficult to sit back and not help him too much when he struggled but his wife was right.  Because she hasn't 'babied' him and refused to allow him the cakes and biscuits that are an integral part of the afternoon he has made such great progress that he no longer is facing an amputation. For a few months he wore a neck brace to support his neck.  He took it off at whist and we constantly heard his wife saying 'Geoffrey lift your head up'. It felt extremely uncomfortable watching him trying to lift his head up off his chest.... he walked into whist with his head held high today. He looks twenty years younger. We are all convinced that his wife's tough love approach has saved his life.

  1. I agree! Use it or lose it is a very true statement. He is lucky to have someone to care and to look out for him and push him to do his best.

  2. Such a heartwarming and uplifting story, there is always a fine line to bullying and tough love, she seems to have got it just right. I pray that I have it right when at times I feel as if I am bullying Gerard. Long may his good health last with a strong loving wife by his side.

  3. A great outcome. It's so difficult to get it right. When someone you love is in pain or suffering, I think we all just want to look after that person and perhaps end up cossetting them a bit too much but Geoffrey's wife definitely took the right approach. It must have been such a nice experience for all concerned to see him coming to whist looking so much younger and fitter. x
