I thoroughly enjoyed being back at the club last night. My carving came along in leaps and bounds and we had a new gentleman. I think he will enjoy the club as it is so friendly and laid back. Tony and I got into carving about eight or nine years ago when my son Alexander took a fancy to trying it. The journey to the club took 45 minutes and the sessions last two hours. It was hardly worth our time to go home and then come back to collect him. We decide that we would try it too. Tony and I were hooked but Alexander wasn't too keen and after a while he quit. Tony and I have carried on since then.
I choose a picture and using carbon paper I transfer it to the wood. If you can draw freehand then you could simply do that. I use a chisel to make 'stop cuts' all around the design. Have a look on you tube as I am sure there must be some nice videos. Oddly enough, I can't recall watching any but plan to take a look myself. It really is a lovely hobby...very calming and therapeutic. A few years ago
I won first prize at a local show and came reserve champion over all in the wood section. I was stunned as there were some really gorgeous carvings. I also got the second prize as I had entered three items.
Here is the third one I entered. It didn't win a prize but I love it

I think it's lovely that you and Tony share this hobby and your little bird would have won a prize from me....it's beautiful.
