My latest carving

My friend Val and I are planning on working in my workshop every Monday afternoon. We both have scroll saws and plan to spend a couple of hours each week making things to sell at a craft fair later in the year.  So many people ask if I make things to sell and I seldom do as I put so many hours into the things I make.  Non crafters rarely understand just how many hours go into making a piece of hand crafted work.  I find that crafters are more willing to pay a fair price for an item. When Tony and I go to craft fairs I always ask whether their goods are handmade.  More often than not I could make the item myself but still buy a little something to support a fellow crafter.
I have spent months trying to find spiral blades with a pin end for my scroll saw. I have given up and simply bought normal blades.  On Sunday I  roughly cut out the outline of a sheep's head and last night at carvers I set to work creating a shawl pin. It will eventually look like this gorgeous one that I found on Pinterest.  The wood that I am using is part of an old chopping board.  I was told last night that it could be sycamore but we weren't entirely sure.  It is a bit thick so will take quite a bit of work to reduce the size...

  1. Love this, at first I thought it was a hair ornament. One thing I have never worked with is wood, Tom has a mini lathe in the cupboard upstairs maybe I should rake it out. OH NO..see what you've done, another project in my head. LOL

    1. You could use it as a hair ornament... And can I say that you will probably love playing with a lathe. You will make dozens of bud vases, trinket bowls, fruit bowls.. etc etc... I haven't touched our lathe in a couple of years as I prefer carving these days.

  3. It's lovely! Chris and I went along to a local carvers club a few months' back with the thought of joining but we haven't got around to it yet. Chris has a scroll saw and at Christmas developed an interest in whittling. I bought him a book and a Swiss Army Knife. The usual problem is time to fit all these wonderful things in! x

    1. I know just what you mean. There are only so many hours in each day. You and I can fill them three times over can't we. x
